BREAKING NEWS: FIRST CASE OF OMICRON VARIANT OF COVID-19 CONFIRMED IN NIGERIA SAYS NCDC.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed the first case of the Omicron variant in the country in the early hours of today. The Omicron variant, which is a new strain of the coronavirus disease, was reported by South Africa and first detected in Botswana.

This was disclosed in a press release given by the NCDC and signed by the Director General, Ifedayo Adetifa. The variant was identified in three travelers from South Africa last week through genomic sequencing of positive samples by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

Dr Ifedayo Adetifa appealed states to ensure strict compliance with preventive measures, while gathering samples for testing, especially with the approved Antigen-based Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT).

He also advised Nigerians to get vaccinated and comply with proven safety measures such as wearing face masks, regular hand washing and/or sanitizing with alcohol based sanitizers, as well as social distancing.

Earlier on, the World Health Organization (WHO) had tagged the new variant a Variant of Concern (VOC) after it was seen to be more communicable and an increased risk of a secondary-infection.

In a related development, countries such as the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Israel among others have placed travel bans on southern African countries following the discovery of the  Omicron variant.
